Masculine and Feminine in everyone

Masculine and Feminine in everyone.

I’ve been reading a lot about the Moon at the moment- the Moon means a lot to us Yogis, it also means something to those who believe in horoscopes, it means something to the Fishermen and many an old wives’ tale has attributed the Moon’s energy to witchcraft and Werewolves. Maybe we all accept the Moon has more power than the acknowledgement of the night.

The Moon in Yoga is a feminine energy; it has a softness that the Sun doesn’t. The Sun is hard, hot and masculine. The Moon is cool and receptive. Many of us are aware of the Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar), but you may not even know that the Moon Salutations exist (Chandra Namaskar). The importance of the Moon in Ashtanga Yoga comprises the timing of the more challenging poses. They believe the Moon’s pulls affect us like the tides as we are over 70% water. All challenging poses are never to be practised when the Moon is at it’s fullest as this can lead to injury.

I recently saw a beautiful friend who practises Reiki healing. I couldn’t put my finger on what was throwing me off, but I didn’t feel balanced within. Reiki works with the energy in your body and I experienced such an incredible hour. I would say to you in earnest I am probably more masculine energy than feminine- and to have that re-iterated to me after the hour was interesting. I feel that this is a constant battle that I forget to put aside time to fight. We are all scaled masculine and feminine energy. If there’s a blockage towards one or the other there will be a conflict in you as you’re not receptive to the full idea of the other.

I personally feel more strength than softness- more reflections of the Sun than the Moon and I have never been one to indulge in what we trait as ‘feminine qualities’ in todays’ society. In truth, I feel uncomfortable in myself with the challenge of balancing my Moon traits.

However, our daughter is going through a phase of only being able to fall asleep in my arms. Just to sit there and feel close to Mum- I can’t even begin to explain the divine, feminine energy this fills me with. To nurture someone who just loves to be close to you is the rawest form of love. And some days I can’t put her down, I just take her with me to sit and dream with her. So I know I have and love some femininity in me. She makes me feel like a Goddess.

This Moon cycle is supposed to be particularly influential on our adventurous spirit. If you are seeking predictability and stability, this is not the time for you! So I will be using this energy to help challenge myself into morphing into a little more softness, receptiveness and femininity.
